The short answer

The best RV dashboard decor is small, light and anchored in place. Our top pick is KC Hawaii’s Halani Hula Solar Doll, a 4.25-inch solar-powered hula dancer with an adhesive base for about $7. For a classic look, choose KC Hawaii’s ukulele hula girl; for laughs, Archie McPhee’s Bigfoot or Jackalope nodder; for camper lovers, Greenlight’s 1:64 Airstream. Whatever you pick, keep it off the passenger airbag panel and below your line of sight, and hold it down with museum putty.

KC Hawaii Halani solar hula dashboard doll in a green grass skirt on a round base

Best overall

KC Hawaii Halani Hula Solar Dashboard Doll

About $6.99 at KC Hawaii · 4.25 in tall · Solar powered · Checked October 4, 2026

If you want one piece of dashboard decor that says “vacation,” start here. Halani is a 4.25-inch hula dancer made of poly resin and plastic, with a small solar panel that keeps her swaying whenever the sun hits the dash, so there are no batteries to replace. She comes with an adhesive base in five skirt colors (red, pink, light green, light blue and dark green), and at about $7 you can buy one for every rig in the family.

What we like

  • Solar powered, so no batteries to replace
  • Adhesive base included
  • Five skirt colors, all under $10

Keep in mind

  • Only dances in direct sunlight
  • Test the adhesive on a hidden spot of your dash first

#2

KC Hawaii vintage-style hula girl dashboard doll holding a ukulele

Best classic hula girl

KC Hawaii Girl with Ukulele Vintage Dashboard Doll

About $12.99 at KC Hawaii · 6.5 in tall · Poly resin · Checked October 4, 2026

This is the dashboard hula girl most of us picture: a vintage-style dancer with a ukulele and a swinging hula motion every time the road gets bumpy. She stands 6.5 inches tall, is made of durable poly resin and comes in green, red or yellow skirts. She has more presence than Halani, so place her low and toward the center of the dash, where she stays below your view of the road.

What we like

  • The classic vintage hula look
  • Bumps keep her dancing, no power needed
  • Three skirt colors

Keep in mind

  • The listing does not say how she attaches, so plan on museum putty
  • Taller figure: keep her below your sight line

#3

Archie McPhee Bigfoot Nodder bobblehead figure on a green base beside its box

Best bobblehead

Archie McPhee Bigfoot Nodder

About $11.95 at Archie McPhee · 6-3/8 in tall · Hard vinyl · Checked October 4, 2026

For RVers who camp where the tall trees are, Bigfoot is the co-pilot. Archie McPhee’s 6-3/8-inch hard vinyl Sasquatch has a spring-mounted head that nods along with every washboard road, and he makes a great conversation starter at the campground. He is an original novelty figure rather than a licensed character, so he fits any rig.

What we like

  • Spring-mounted head nods on every bump
  • No batteries or sunlight needed
  • About $12

Keep in mind

  • The listing does not mention an adhesive base, so plan on museum putty
  • Over 6 inches tall, so it suits a deep dash best

#4

Archie McPhee Jackalope Nodder, an antlered rabbit bobblehead on a green base beside its box

Best road-trip mascot

Archie McPhee Jackalope Nodder

About $9.95 at Archie McPhee · 5-3/4 in tall · Adhesive base included · Checked October 4, 2026

The jackalope, a jackrabbit with antelope horns, is a legend of Western roadside lore, and Douglas, Wyoming proudly calls itself its home. This 5-3/4-inch hard vinyl nodder comes with an adhesive base, which makes it one of the easiest picks here to install. Pair it with a Wyoming or Black Hills itinerary and you have a road-trip mascot with a story.

What we like

  • Adhesive base included
  • Under $10
  • Smaller than the Bigfoot nodder

Keep in mind

  • Nods only on bumps; no solar motion
  • Novelty items can sell out, so check stock

#5

Kikkerland Solar Dachshund, a solar-powered nodding dog figure

Best solar pet

Kikkerland Solar Dachshund

About $28 at Kikkerland · Polyresin · Solar powered · Checked October 4, 2026

Kikkerland’s solar dachshund nods his head whenever his solar panel is in the sun, a cheerful hello for anyone who travels with (or misses) a long-bodied pup. He is made of polyresin and needs no batteries. Kikkerland designs him for sunny spots like a windowsill, so he does not come with an adhesive base; a few pea-sized balls of museum putty keep him planted on the dash.

What we like

  • Solar nodding, no batteries
  • A sweet gift for dog people
  • Sturdy polyresin build

Keep in mind

  • No adhesive base included
  • Pricier than the hula and nodder picks

#6

Kikkerland Solar Cat, a black and white lucky cat figure with a raised paw, on a sunny windowsill

Best good-luck charm

Kikkerland Solar Cat

About $28 at Kikkerland · Solar powered · Checked October 4, 2026

Inspired by the iconic Japanese lucky cat, this black-and-white kitty waves her paw whenever sunlight reaches her solar panel. Kikkerland sells her as a good-luck charm, and a little extra luck never hurts on a travel day with a long grade ahead. Like the dachshund, she is made for sunny sills, so anchor her with museum putty.

What we like

  • Waving paw runs on sunshine
  • A friendly lucky charm for travel days
  • No batteries to replace

Keep in mind

  • No adhesive base included
  • Waves only in direct sun

#7

Greenlight 1:64 scale die-cast Airstream 16-foot Bambi travel trailer model

Best mini camper

Greenlight Airstream 1:64 Scale Model

About $15 at Airstream Supply Company · 1:64 die-cast · Limited edition · Checked October 4, 2026

A tiny Airstream on the dash is a wink to everyone who loves the silver bullet. Greenlight’s officially licensed 1:64 die-cast models are sold by Airstream’s own store as a 16-foot Vintage Bambi (with red curtains, or unrestored) or a 1971 Land Yacht Safari (restored or unrestored). They are small and light, so a dab of putty holds one in place. The Green Machine versions were sold out when we checked.

What we like

  • Detailed die-cast replica
  • Officially licensed by Airstream
  • Several versions to choose from

Keep in mind

  • Limited editions, and some versions sell out
  • No base, so it needs putty

#8

Ritchie X-10-A RitchieSport automotive dashboard compass on its gray mounting bracket

Best working gadget

Ritchie X-10-A RitchieSport Automotive Compass

About $44 at Citimarine Store · 2 in dial · 12-volt night lighting · Checked October 4, 2026

Ritchie is best known for marine compasses, and the X-10-A brings that know-how to your dash. It has a 2-inch direct-reading dial, built-in compensators to correct for your vehicle’s magnetic field, and green night lighting on 12-volt power. A reversible bracket mounts it on horizontal, angled, vertical or overhead surfaces, two-sided adhesive pads are included, and Ritchie backs it with a 5-year warranty. It keeps working when your phone has no signal.

What we like

  • Works with no cell signal
  • Easy-to-read dial with night lighting
  • 5-year warranty

Keep in mind

  • The night light needs wiring to 12-volt power
  • Compensate it after installing; nearby metal and electronics can throw it off

#9

Sun Company AltiTilt dashboard altimeter and inclinometer gauge

Best for mountain drivers

Sun Company AltiTilt Dashboard Altimeter and Inclinometer

About $90.49 at Sun Company · Altitude to 15,000 ft · Tilt to 45° · Checked October 4, 2026

Climbing toward a high pass, it is fun to watch the elevation tick up. The AltiTilt reads altitude up to 15,000 feet and barometric pressure, and its inclinometer shows tilt from -45 to 45 degrees. It mounts on the top or front of the dash with an adjustable bracket and hook-and-loop fasteners, with a spare set so you can move it between your RV and your tow car, and the altimeter pops out of the housing to take on a hike.

What we like

  • Altitude, pressure and tilt in one gauge
  • Spare fasteners for a second vehicle
  • Altimeter detaches for hikes

Keep in mind

  • The priciest pick on this list
  • Mount the housing vertically for accurate tilt readings

#10

QuakeHOLD! Museum Putty package from Ready America

Best add-on

QuakeHOLD! Museum Putty

About $4.99 at Ready America · Removable and reusable · Checked October 4, 2026

Every pick above rides better with a little museum putty underneath. Ready America makes QuakeHOLD! to keep collectibles from tipping over in earthquakes, and it describes the putty as removable, reusable and non-toxic. Roll a bit soft in your fingers, press it under the base of your figure, and lift with a twist when you want it off. RV Travel recommends museum putty for keeping things in place in an RV, too.

What we like

  • Removable and reusable
  • Under $5
  • Works with almost any base

Keep in mind

  • Can soften on a very hot dashboard
  • Test it on a hidden spot of your dash first

Keep it safe

Keep your dash decor safe and legal

Cute should never get in the way of a safe drive. Four quick rules before you place anything.

Stay off the airbag

Never place decor on or near the passenger airbag panel. Owner’s manuals, such as Kia’s, warn that objects there can become dangerous projectiles if the airbag inflates.

Small and light wins

In a hard stop, loose items keep moving at the speed you were driving. State Auto Insurance notes that even a pen or phone can injure someone, so choose small figures and anchor them.

Keep your view clear

Laws vary by state. California Vehicle Code 26708 bans objects that block or reduce your view through the windshield, and Minnesota bans objects hanging between the driver and the windshield.

Mind the heat

In an Arizona State University study, dashboards in the sun averaged 157°F after an hour, and the National Weather Service says dark dashboards can top 200°F. Bring delicate pieces inside when you park.

Step by step

How to make dashboard decor stay put

Five minutes with museum putty keeps your favorite figure riding along instead of rolling under the brake pedal.

  1. Pick a safe spot. Choose a flat area toward the center of the dash, below your line of sight and well away from the passenger airbag panel.
  2. Clean both surfaces. Wipe the dash and the bottom of the figure with a damp cloth and let them dry so the putty can grip.
  3. Warm the putty. Roll a few pea-sized pieces in your fingers until soft, then press them onto the base of the figure.
  4. Press and set. Press the figure down firmly with a slight twist, and give it a few minutes to settle.
  5. Do the bump test. Give it a gentle nudge before you drive. To remove it later, lift and twist rather than pulling straight up.

Test on a hidden spot first

Dashboard materials vary, so try a small piece of putty or adhesive on an out-of-sight corner before committing. On scorching days putty and adhesive can soften, so recheck your figures after a hot spell.

Helpful answers

RV dashboard decor questions, answered

What RVers ask most before they give their dash a little personality.

A tchotchke (from Yiddish) is a small decorative knickknack. On a dashboard that usually means a hula doll, a bobblehead or nodder, a solar-powered figure, or a mini vehicle that rides along and adds personality to the cab.

Our top pick is the KC Hawaii Halani Hula Solar Doll. It is 4.25 inches tall, sways on solar power with no batteries, includes an adhesive base and costs about $7. For a classic look, choose KC Hawaii’s Girl with Ukulele doll; for humor, an Archie McPhee Bigfoot or Jackalope nodder.

Use the figure’s adhesive base if it has one, or museum putty such as QuakeHOLD!, which is removable and reusable. Clean the surface first, press the figure down with a slight twist, and test it with a gentle nudge before you drive. Try putty on a hidden spot of your dash first.

Generally yes, as long as nothing blocks your view of the road. Rules vary by state: California Vehicle Code 26708 bans objects that obstruct or reduce the driver’s view through the windshield, and Minnesota bans objects hanging between the driver and the windshield. Never put decor on or near the passenger airbag panel.

Yes, as long as the solar panel gets direct sunlight through the windshield. They stop moving in shade, on cloudy days and at night, and they need no batteries. Face the panel toward the glass for the most motion.

It can get hot enough to cause trouble. An Arizona State University study found sun-exposed dashboards averaged 157°F after an hour, and the National Weather Service says dark dashboards can exceed 200°F. Adhesive and putty can soften, so recheck your decor after hot days and bring delicate pieces inside when you park.

Our top pick

Start with the Halani Hula Solar Doll

A 4.25-inch hula dancer that sways on sunshine, sticks down with its own adhesive base and costs about $7.
