Lifestyle Paperback eBook

#1 · Best overall

Living the RV Life: Your Ultimate Guide to Life on the Road

By Marc & Julie Bennett · Adams Media, 2018 · 256 pages

Marc and Julie Bennett, the couple behind the RVLove blog and YouTube channel, wrote the guide they wish they had been handed before they first hit the road. It takes the big decisions in a sensible order: whether RV life suits you, choosing the right rig, budgeting, working and staying healthy on the road, and the paperwork side of full-time life. Profiles of real RVers sit between the chapters, and the bright, magazine-style layout makes it an easy book for couples to read together.

What we like

  • Covers money, work and paperwork, not just rigs
  • Real stories from many kinds of RVers
  • Colorful layout that is easy to skim

Keep in mind

  • An overview, not a technical manual
  • Published in 2018, so some costs and tech have changed

Best for: Anyone deciding whether to go part-time or full-time

Reference Paperback eBook

Book cover of The RVer’s Bible by Kim Baker and Sunny Baker

#2 · Best one-book reference

The RVer’s Bible: Everything You Need to Know About Choosing, Using & Enjoying Your RV

By Kim & Sunny Baker · Touchstone (Simon & Schuster), revised edition · 400 pages

If you only want one general RV book on the shelf, this is the long-running choice. Kim and Sunny Baker cover choosing and buying an RV, driving and backing up, hookups, basic upkeep and campground etiquette, plus the part most guides skip: how to get along when two people share a very small space. It reads like a patient friend who has already made the mistakes.

What we like

  • Wide coverage in a single volume
  • Good on the people side of RV life
  • From a mainstream publisher and still in print

Keep in mind

  • First written in the 1990s, so nothing on lithium batteries, Starlink or today’s apps
  • Light on boondocking

Best for: Readers who like one trusted reference on the shelf

Repair Paperback

Book cover of RV Repair & Maintenance Manual by Bob Livingston

#3 · Best for DIY repairs

RV Repair & Maintenance Manual, 5th Edition

By Bob Livingston · Trailer Life Books, 5th edition, 2011 · about 500 pages

Long called the standard RV fix-it book, this manual from the publishers of Trailer Life magazine walks through every system in plain language: 12-volt and 120-volt electrical, LP gas, fresh and waste water, generators, furnaces, air conditioners, and the chassis and exterior. Photos, charts and step-by-step checklists make it useful even if you have never held a multimeter. Keep it aboard and it can save you a repair shop visit, or at least help you explain the problem.

What we like

  • The most complete do-it-yourself RV repair book
  • Plenty of photos, charts and checklists
  • Written for owners, not mechanics

Keep in mind

  • From 2011, so it predates lithium and smart-RV systems
  • New copies can be scarce; many sell used

Best for: Hands-on owners who want to do their own maintenance

Budget Paperback Kindle

Book cover of How to Live in a Car, Van, or RV by Bob Wells

#4 · Best on a budget

How to Live in a Car, Van, or RV: And Get Out of Debt, Travel, and Find True Freedom

By Bob Wells · Self-published, 2014 · 178 pages

Bob Wells founded the CheapRVLiving website and the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous gathering, and later appeared as himself in the film Nomadland. His short, plain-spoken guide covers the nuts and bolts of low-cost life on the road: picking a vehicle, staying warm or cool, power, toilets, finding a free place to park for the night and earning money as you go. It is as much about mindset as gear.

What we like

  • Written by the best-known voice of budget nomad life
  • Advice you can follow on very little money
  • Honest about the hard parts

Keep in mind

  • Self-published with a plain layout
  • Aimed more at vans than big rigs

Best for: Budget full-timers and van dwellers

Boondocking Paperback Kindle

Book cover of Mobile Solar Power Made Easy! by William Prowse

#5 · Best for boondocking

Mobile Solar Power Made Easy!: Mobile 12 Volt Off Grid Solar System Design and Installation

By William Prowse · Self-published, 2017 · 92 pages

Solar is the upgrade that turns a weekend camper into an off-grid rig, and this slim guide makes the math friendly. William Prowse walks step by step through sizing panels, choosing a charge controller, batteries and inverter, and wiring it all safely, with clear diagrams and rules of thumb for RVs, vans and boats. It is one of the most popular RV solar books for good reason.

What we like

  • Clear diagrams and simple sizing math
  • Short and practical
  • Fills the off-grid power gap other books skip

Keep in mind

  • From 2017; battery prices and options have changed
  • Short, so pair it with your equipment manuals

Best for: DIYers adding solar for boondocking

Start a rig binder

Keep your owner’s manuals, appliance model numbers, tire sizes and a maintenance log in one binder next to your repair manual. When something breaks far from a dealer, having the right part number is half the fix.

#6 · Best for Interstate drives

The Next Exit 2026: USA Interstate Highway Service Guide

By Next Exit, Inc. · Next Exit, Inc., 2026 edition · about 500 pages

A favorite in the co-pilot seat for decades. The Next Exit lists what you will find at every exit on every U.S. Interstate: gas brands, food, lodging, camping and other services, in order, mile by mile. It needs no signal and no battery, which makes it perfect for planning a fuel or lunch stop with plenty of room to get a big rig off the highway. A new edition comes out every year.

What we like

  • Exit-by-exit detail no map shows
  • Works with no cell signal
  • Inexpensive and updated yearly

Keep in mind

  • Interstates only
  • Look-alike titles exist on Amazon, so check the cover

Best for: Long Interstate hauls and co-pilots

Newest edition Large print

Book cover of Rand McNally 2027 Large Scale Road Atlas by Rand McNally

#7 · Best road atlas

Rand McNally 2027 Large Scale Road Atlas

By Rand McNally · Rand McNally, 2027 edition (released April 2026)

Every RV should carry a paper atlas for the moments the phone shows no bars. The Large Scale edition enlarges the familiar Rand McNally maps so they are easier to read from the passenger seat, and covers every U.S. state plus Canada and Mexico. Spread it on the dinette to see a whole trip at once, something a phone screen never does well. If space is tight, the standard 2027 Road Atlas is smaller and cheaper.

What we like

  • Newest edition on sale
  • Bigger maps, easier on the eyes
  • Works anywhere, no signal needed

Keep in mind

  • Big to store in a small rig
  • No campground listings or low-clearance warnings

Best for: Trip planning and backup navigation

Back roads Paperback eBook

Book cover of Road Trip USA by Jamie Jensen

#8 · Best for back roads

Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America’s Two-Lane Highways

By Jamie Jensen · Moon Travel, 10th edition, 2024 · 968 pages

For RVers who would rather take the slow road, this classic maps 11 cross-country routes on America’s two-lane highways, covering more than 35,000 miles with over 125 maps. Jamie Jensen points out diners, roadside oddities, small museums and scenic detours stop by stop, so you can plan a day’s drive around the good stuff instead of the fastest line. Now in its 10th edition.

What we like

  • Back-road routes that skip the Interstates
  • Huge amount of stop-by-stop detail
  • Recently updated

Keep in mind

  • Not written for RVs; check clearances and campgrounds yourself
  • Heavy at nearly 1,000 pages

Best for: Planning scenic, unhurried cross-country trips

Shelf 3 of 3 · Stories

Best RV and road trip books for inspiration

Five much-loved road-trip stories, true and fictional, to read at the campsite or listen to on drive days.

Classic Paperback Audiobook

Book cover of Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck

#11 · The RV classic

Travels with Charley: In Search of America

By John Steinbeck · Penguin; first published 1962 · 288 pages

The book that made camper travel romantic. In 1960, at 58, John Steinbeck set out in a custom camper on a GMC pickup he named Rocinante, with his poodle Charley riding shotgun, to rediscover the country he had spent his career writing about. The loop ran about 10,000 miles, and the result is short, warm, funny and wistful. Almost every RVer we know has a copy.

What we like

  • The original camper road-trip story
  • Short and easy to read
  • A Nobel Prize winner at his most relaxed

Keep in mind

  • Later reporting showed some scenes were embellished
  • Some attitudes reflect its era

Best for: Every RVer’s bookshelf

Classic Paperback Audiobook

Book cover of Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon

#12 · Best for back-road dreamers

Blue Highways: A Journey into America

By William Least Heat-Moon · Little, Brown / Back Bay; first published 1982 · 448 pages

After losing his teaching job and his marriage in the same season, the author set off in a camper van he named Ghost Dancing, sticking to the small roads drawn in blue on old highway maps. Over about 13,000 miles he met the people who keep small-town America going. It spent 42 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and still inspires RVers to take the long way.

What we like

  • Landmark American travel writing
  • Memorable small-town characters
  • A true van-camper journey

Keep in mind

  • Long and slow-paced
  • Dense prose; best read a chapter at a time

Best for: Thoughtful readers who love back roads

Nonfiction Paperback Audiobook

Book cover of Nomadland by Jessica Bruder

#13 · Best modern nomad story

Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century

By Jessica Bruder · W. W. Norton, 2017 (paperback 2018) · 288 pages

Journalist Jessica Bruder spent months on the road with older Americans who live in vans and RVs and move between seasonal jobs, from sugar beet harvests to Amazon’s CamperForce program. At its center is Linda May, whose resilience and humor carry the book. The film adaptation won Best Picture at the 2021 Academy Awards, and Bob Wells from our list appears in both.

What we like

  • Deep, respectful reporting
  • Real people you will remember
  • Basis for the Oscar-winning film

Keep in mind

  • Sobering rather than feel-good
  • More about economics than travel tips

Best for: Understanding today’s nomad community

Humor Paperback Audiobook

Book cover of The Lost Continent by Bill Bryson

#14 · Funniest road trip

The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America

By Bill Bryson · Harper Perennial; first published 1989 · 320 pages

Bill Bryson borrows his mother’s car in Des Moines and sets out across 38 states to relive the family road trips of his childhood and find the perfect small town. It was his first big travel book, and it is the one on this list most likely to make you laugh out loud at the dinette. Read it after a long drive day.

What we like

  • Laugh-out-loud funny
  • Classic all-American road trip
  • Quick, light read

Keep in mind

  • The sarcastic tone is not for everyone
  • A car trip, not an RV trip

Best for: Light reading at the campsite

Novel Paperback eBook

Book cover of The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadoorian

#15 · Best RV novel

The Leisure Seeker: A Novel

By Michael Zadoorian · William Morrow; first published 2009 · 288 pages

The only novel on our list, and the one where the RV is a main character. Ella and John, married for decades and both in their eighties, slip away from their doctors and grown children in their old camper, the Leisure Seeker, and head down Route 66 toward Disneyland. It is funny, tender and honest about growing old together. The 2017 film stars Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland.

What we like

  • An RV road trip at the heart of the story
  • Funny and deeply moving
  • Has a film version too

Keep in mind

  • Fiction, not a how-to
  • Heavy themes of illness and aging

Best for: Readers who want an RV story with heart

Helpful answers

RV book questions, answered

The questions RVers ask us most about what to read and carry on the road.

For most beginners, Living the RV Life by Marc and Julie Bennett (2018) is the best place to start. It covers choosing a rig, budgeting, working on the road and the paperwork of full-time life in a friendly, full-color format. Pair it with a repair manual such as Bob Livingston’s RV Repair & Maintenance Manual once you own an RV. See our full list of RV books for beginners.

Most experienced RVers carry three kinds of books: a repair manual for when something breaks, a current paper road atlas for when the phone has no signal, and a road or campground guide such as The Next Exit or Moon USA RV Adventures. Add one good road-trip story for evenings at the campsite.

Yes, as a backup. Cell signal disappears in many of the places RVers love most, and a paper atlas shows the whole route at a glance in a way a phone screen cannot. Use the atlas for planning and an RV-specific GPS or app to check bridge heights and weight limits while you drive.

Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck, first published in 1962, is the best-known camper travel book. In 1960 Steinbeck drove about 10,000 miles around the United States in a camper truck he named Rocinante, traveling with his poodle Charley.

Yes. Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century (2017) is a work of nonfiction by journalist Jessica Bruder about older Americans who live in vans and RVs and travel between seasonal jobs. The film adaptation won Best Picture at the 2021 Academy Awards and features real nomads, including Linda May and Bob Wells.
