The short answer

For most RVs, the best wax is a marine/RV formula made for fiberglass gelcoat, like Meguiar’s M63 Flagship Premium Marine Wax, which removes light oxidation and protects in one step. If the walls leave white chalk on your hand, wax alone will not fix it: remove the oxidation first with a compound such as Meguiar’s M67 or the Meguiar’s M49 oxidation removal kit, then seal it with a durable wax like Collinite 885. Use a dual-action polisher for big rigs, wax two or three times a year, and keep it fresh between waxes with a waterless wash wax.

Start here

Check your finish before you buy

Wax protects a finish; it does not repair one. Match the product to how oxidized your gelcoat really is, and you will save money and a lot of elbow grease.

Level 1

Glossy

What you see: Wall reflects clearly, beads water and leaves your towel clean.

Fix: Wax only

Use: Hybrid Ceramic, Collinite 885 or Wash Wax ALL

Level 2

Dull

What you see: Shine looks flat or hazy, but a dark towel only picks up a faint tint.

Fix: Cleaner wax or one-step

Use: Meguiar’s M63, 3M Polish + Wax or 3D Speed

Level 3

Chalky

What you see: Your hand or towel comes away white. The color looks faded and patchy.

Fix: Remove, polish, wax

Use: Meguiar’s M49 kit or Star brite Restorer Wax, then Collinite 885 or Poli Glow

Level 4

Heavy chalk

What you see: Thick white residue, rough to the touch, sun side much worse than the shade side.

Fix: Compound with a machine

Use: Meguiar’s M67 or 3M Heavy Cutting on a DA polisher, then polish and wax

The 10-second chalk test

Wash a small spot on the sun side of your rig, let it dry, then rub it firmly with a dark microfiber towel or a clean fingertip. No color on the towel means you only need wax. A faint tint means a cleaner wax or one-step. White chalk means the oxidation has to come off before any wax will shine.

#1

Meguiar’s M63 Flagship Marine Wax product photo

Best overall wax

Meguiar’s M63 Flagship Premium Marine Wax (32 oz)

Oxidation it handles Light

Polymer cleaner waxHand or DA polisherEffort: Easy$

If your RV’s fiberglass still has some shine but looks a little flat, this is the bottle to start with. Meguiar’s built M63 for fiberglass and gelcoat, the same finish found on most RV front caps and sidewalls. It removes light oxidation, fine scratches and swirls as you apply it, then leaves polymer protection against UV. That covers the yearly wax job in one product. It goes on by hand or with a dual-action polisher, and it wipes off without a fight.

Key specs: 32 oz liquid · polymer formula (not carnauba) · fiberglass and gelcoat · hand or dual-action polisher

What we like

  • Cleans light oxidation and protects in the same pass
  • Made for fiberglass and gelcoat, not repurposed car wax
  • Easy on, easy off by hand or machine

Keep in mind

  • Not strong enough for chalky gelcoat; compound first (see M67)
  • Work small sections in the shade so it does not bake on

#2

3M Perfect-It Polish + Wax product photo

Best one-step polish + wax

3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Light Cutting Polish + Wax, 36110 (1 quart)

Oxidation it handles Light

Polish + waxRotary, DA or by handEffort: Moderate$$

3M’s Perfect-It line is what many boat and RV detail shops use, and this is its one-step finisher. It polishes out small scratches, swirl marks and light oxidation on gelcoat and leaves a wax layer behind, so a dull rig gets its shine and protection back in a single pass. On heavier oxidation, 3M pairs it with its Heavy Cutting Compound (pick #6) as the second step.

Key specs: 1 quart liquid · part number 36110 · one-step polish and wax · gelcoat and fiberglass on boats and RVs

What we like

  • Polishes and waxes gelcoat in one step
  • Pro-grade finish from the Perfect-It marine line
  • Natural second step after 3M Heavy Cutting Compound

Keep in mind

  • 3M recommends a rotary polisher and wool pad; hand use is for small areas
  • Labeled for professional use, so wear gloves and follow the label

#3

Star brite Premium Restorer Wax product photo

Best restorer wax

Star brite Premium Restorer Wax for Medium to Heavy Oxidation (32 oz)

Oxidation it handles Medium to heavy

Restorer waxHand or bufferEffort: Moderate$$

Star brite’s Restorer Wax is made for the faded, chalky gelcoat that a regular wax only smears around. It removes medium to heavy oxidation and leaves UV and stain protection behind, so you restore and protect in one product. Star brite formulated it with colored fiberglass in mind, which makes it a good match for RVs with painted-look swirls and colored caps that fade first.

Key specs: 32 oz cream · removes medium to heavy oxidation · UV and stain protection · hand or buffer

What we like

  • Restores and protects in one product
  • Made for medium to heavy oxidation
  • Good choice for colored fiberglass that has faded

Keep in mind

  • Very heavy chalk may still need a true compound first
  • Work in small sections; it takes some effort on a big rig

#4

Meguiar’s M49 Oxidation Removal Kit product photo

Best oxidation removal kit

Meguiar’s M49 Marine/RV Fiberglass Oxidation Removal Kit (M4965, 3 x 16 oz)

Oxidation it handles Moderate

3-step kitDA polisher recommendedEffort: Weekend job$$

When the gelcoat is clearly oxidized, a matched system takes the guesswork out of it. This Marine/RV kit packs three 16 oz bottles that work in order: M49 Oxidation Remover takes off the oxidation, stains and scratches, M45 Polish brings back the gloss, and M56 Pure Wax seals it in. Each step is designed to follow the one before, so you are not mixing brands and hoping they get along.

Key specs: M49 Oxidation Remover, M45 Polish and M56 Pure Wax, 16 oz each · fiberglass and gelcoat

What we like

  • Complete remove, polish and protect system in one box
  • Each step is made to follow the last
  • Made by Meguiar’s Marine/RV line for gelcoat

Keep in mind

  • Three steps on a whole rig is a full weekend
  • A dual-action polisher makes a huge difference

#5

Meguiar’s M67 One-Step Compound product photo

Best for heavy oxidation

Meguiar’s M67 Marine/RV One-Step Compound (32 oz)

Oxidation it handles Heavy

CompoundDA polisher recommendedEffort: Hard work$

If your hand comes away white when you rub the sidewall, wax and light polish will not fix it. M67 is a true compound for fiberglass gelcoat on RVs and boats. It cuts through moderate to heavy oxidation and brings the original color back on faded front caps and sun-side walls. It is a cutting step, not protection, so plan to follow it with a polish or wax the same day.

Key specs: 32 oz liquid compound · fiberglass gelcoat on RVs and boats · hand or polisher

What we like

  • Removes oxidation that polishes cannot touch
  • Brings color back on chalky, sun-faded gelcoat
  • One bottle goes a long way with a machine

Keep in mind

  • Always follow with wax; compound leaves the finish unprotected
  • Slow going by hand on a big rig

#6

3M Perfect-It Heavy Cutting Compound product photo

Best pro-grade compound

3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Heavy Cutting Compound (1 quart)

Oxidation it handles Heavy

CompoundRotary or DA polisherEffort: Hard work$$$

When an older rig is badly chalked, this is the compound the pros reach for. 3M formulated Perfect-It Heavy Cutting Compound for gelcoat and fiberglass on boats and RVs, and it cuts fast, which matters when you are working a 40 ft wall. Follow it with 3M’s Light Cutting Polish + Wax (pick #2) to take out the haze and add protection.

Key specs: 1 quart liquid compound · gelcoat and fiberglass on boats and RVs · machine application

What we like

  • Fast cutting on heavy, chalky oxidation
  • Pairs with 3M Polish + Wax for a two-step restore
  • A quart covers a lot of gelcoat

Keep in mind

  • Costs more than Meguiar’s M67
  • Labeled for professional use; machine, gloves and patience required

Pro tip

Do one 2 x 2 ft test spot before committing to a whole side. Try the gentlest product first (a one-step), and only step up to a compound if the chalk is still there. It is the fastest way to find the least work that gets the job done.

#7

3D Speed All-in-One product photo

Best all-in-one polish

3D Speed All-in-One Polish & Wax (16 oz)

Oxidation it handles Light to moderate

Polish + waxHand or DA polisherEffort: Moderate$$

3D Speed is a favorite with detailers because it corrects and protects in one product. It removes light oxidation and swirl marks, then leaves a layer of protection behind, so a mildly dull RV can go from flat to glossy in one pass with a dual-action polisher. It also follows a compound like M67 nicely when you want to finish in two steps instead of three.

Key specs: 16 oz liquid · one-step polish and wax · works by hand or with a DA polisher

What we like

  • Corrects and protects in one step
  • Nice finishing step after a compound
  • Made in the USA

Keep in mind

  • Plan a full day per side on a large rig
  • Heavy oxidation still needs a compound first

#8

Collinite No. 885 Fleetwax product photo

Longest-lasting wax

Collinite No. 885 Heavy Duty Fleetwax paste (12 oz)

Oxidation it handles None (protection only)

Paste waxBy handEffort: Moderate$

Once the finish is clean and glossy, Collinite 885 is about making it last. It is a heavy-duty carnauba and polymer paste with no abrasives, and Collinite calls it its longest-lasting marine weather protection. That is why boat owners and full-timers swear by it for the sun side of a rig. Prefer a liquid? Collinite’s No. 925 Fleetwax is the easier-to-spread option built for fiberglass.

Key specs: 12 oz hard paste · carnauba + polymer · gelcoat, fiberglass and painted surfaces

What we like

  • Collinite’s longest-lasting marine wax
  • Great top coat after compounding and polishing
  • A little goes a long way

Keep in mind

  • Does not remove oxidation; prep the surface first
  • Paste takes more elbow grease than a spray

#9

Star brite RV Premium Polish product photo

Best dirt-repelling finish

Star brite RV Premium Polish

Oxidation it handles Light

Polymer polishHand or orbital bufferEffort: Easy$$

Star brite made this polish specifically for RVs, campers and trailers. Its polymer formula bonds to fiberglass, painted surfaces and polished metal and repels dirt, grime and greasy stains, so black streaks and road film wash off more easily. Water beads and sheets off, and UV inhibitors help guard gelcoat against fading and chalking. It goes on by hand with microfiber or with an orbital buffer, even over old wax.

Key specs: Polymer formula · UV inhibitors · fiberglass, painted surfaces and polished metal · hand or orbital buffer

What we like

  • Repels dirt and greasy black-streak grime
  • UV inhibitors help prevent fading and chalking
  • Goes on over old wax or polish

Keep in mind

  • A protectant, not a cutting compound
  • Reapply through the season in hot, sunny climates

#10

Meguiar’s Hybrid Ceramic Wax product photo

Best spray-on ceramic

Meguiar’s Hybrid Ceramic Wax (26 oz)

Oxidation it handles None (protection only)

Ceramic (SiO2) hybridSpray on, rinse offEffort: Very easy$

Hybrid Ceramic Wax is the fastest way to add slick, water-beading protection to a whole rig. You spray it on a wet, just-washed surface and rinse it off, so a 40 ft coach gets a ceramic top-up in the time it takes to wash it. It will not fix oxidation, but it is a great maintenance layer on a finish that is already in good shape.

Key specs: 26 oz trigger spray · hybrid ceramic (SiO2) · applied to a wet surface during the wash

What we like

  • Coats a whole rig in minutes
  • Strong water beading keeps walls cleaner
  • Inexpensive way to top up protection

Keep in mind

  • Needs a hose, so check your campground’s wash rules
  • Maintenance only; it will not remove chalk

#11

Aero Cosmetics Wash Wax ALL product photo

Best waterless wax

Aero Cosmetics Wet or Waterless Wash Wax ALL kit (144 oz)

Oxidation it handles None (protection only)

Waterless wash + waxSpray and wipeEffort: Easy$$

This is how you keep a freshly waxed rig looking that way on the road. Wash Wax ALL lifts dust and road film and leaves a thin layer of UV-protective wax as you dry, with no hose and no runoff, so it works at parks that do not allow RV washing. It is safe on gelcoat, decals and existing wax or ceramic coatings. Our RV exterior cleaning guide covers the full wash routine.

Key specs: 1 gallon refill + 16 oz sprayer + towels · wet or waterless · safe on decals and coatings

What we like

  • Campground-friendly: no hose, no runoff
  • Cleans and refreshes wax in one pass
  • Safe over decals and ceramic coatings

Keep in mind

  • Light to moderate dirt only; rinse a mud-caked rig first
  • Maintains a finish, does not restore one

Watch the decals

Compounds and polishes can haze or lift vinyl graphics. Tape off decals with painter’s tape before machine polishing, and wax over them by hand with a non-abrasive product only.

#12

Poli Glow restoration kit product photo

Best long-term restoration

Poli Glow Boat & RV Restoration Fiberglass Kit (4-in-1 Basic Kit)

Oxidation it handles Moderate (after prep)

Acrylic coatingHand applicator, thin coatsEffort: Weekend job$$$

Poli Glow is a different idea from wax: a water-based acrylic coating you build up in several thin coats over clean, oxidation-free gelcoat. In Practical Sailor’s long-term outdoor test, Poli Glow ranked with the top hull restorers for keeping its gloss after 18 months, with only a few maintenance coats a year. It is popular with RVers who would rather not wax a big rig several times a year. Buy it on Amazon or straight from Poli Glow.

Key specs: 4-in-1 basic kit · water-based acrylic coating · about five initial coats, then maintenance coats

What we like

  • Long-lasting gloss with yearly maintenance coats
  • Thin coats dry fast, so it goes on quickly
  • Good choice for older, faded gelcoat once it is prepped

Keep in mind

  • Oxidation must be removed first, or it seals in the chalk
  • Removing it later takes the maker’s stripper

#13

Griot’s Garage G9 polisher product photo

Best polisher

Griot’s Garage G9 Random Orbital Polisher, 1000 W

Use it for Every finish level

Dual-action polisherElectric, 6 speedsEffort: Saves hours$$$

A dual-action (random orbital) polisher turns compounding a whole RV from impossible to a weekend job, and it is much more forgiving for beginners than a rotary buffer. Griot’s G9 runs a 1000-watt motor with a 9 mm orbit, six speed settings and a 10 ft rubber cord, and it comes with a 6 inch backing plate. That is plenty of power for gelcoat without the burn-through risk of a rotary.

Key specs: 1000 W · 9 mm orbit · 6 speeds · 6 in backing plate (5 in optional) · 10 ft cord

What we like

  • Random orbit motion is safe for first-timers
  • Six speeds: low to spread, high to cut
  • Long 10 ft cord helps on scaffolding

Keep in mind

  • Heavy to hold overhead on tall walls
  • Still need pads and a good extension cord

#14

Lake Country 6.5 in HDO pads product photo

Best polishing pads

Lake Country 6.5-inch HDO foam polishing pad kit (3-pack)

Use it for Every finish level

Foam padsFits 6 in backing plateEffort: Easy$$

Pads matter as much as the product. This three-pack of heavy-duty orbital (HDO) foam pads gives you separate pads for cutting, polishing and finishing, so grit from a compounding pad never ends up scratching a fresh wax coat. Lake Country foam is the go-to with detailers, and these fit the 6 inch backing plate on most DA polishers, including the G9.

Key specs: 3 pads · 6.5 in heavy-duty orbital foam · fits a 6 in backing plate

What we like

  • One pad per step means no cross-contamination
  • Built for dual-action polishers
  • Fits most 6 in DA backing plates

Keep in mind

  • Clean pads often; a loaded pad stops cutting
  • Plan on extra cutting pads for a big rig

#15

HOMEXCEL microfiber 12-pack product photo

Best towels

HOMEXCEL microfiber cleaning cloths, 12-pack

Use it for Every finish level

MicrofiberBuff and wipeEffort: Easy$

Every wax, polish and compound on this page comes off with microfiber, and you will use more towels than you expect on an RV. This 12-pack comes in four colors, which makes it easy to keep compound towels, wax towels and glass towels apart. They are lint-free and soft enough for gelcoat and paint.

Key specs: 12 towels · 11.5 x 11.5 in · four colors · lint-free

What we like

  • Plenty of towels for a full rig
  • Color sets keep compound and wax towels separate
  • Machine washable

Keep in mind

  • Thinner than plush buffing towels
  • Wash separately and skip fabric softener

Step by step

How to wax an RV and remove oxidation

The same eight steps work on a 20 ft trailer or a 45 ft coach. On a big rig, plan the full restore over a weekend and do one side at a time.

  1. Pick a cool, shaded day Hot gelcoat flashes product before you can work it, leaving streaks. Early morning or a covered spot is best; if the wall is hot to the touch, wait.
  2. Wash and decontaminate Wash top to bottom, and pre-treat bugs and black streaks so you are not grinding grit into the finish. Let everything dry fully.
  3. Do the chalk test and a test spot Rub a dark microfiber on the sun side. Then try your gentlest product on a 2 x 2 ft spot and only step up if the chalk remains.
  4. Tape off decals and rubber trim Painter’s tape over graphics, window gaskets and black plastic keeps compound and wax residue off the parts that stain.
  5. Remove oxidation if you found chalk Work 2 x 2 ft sections with a compound like M67 on a cutting pad, at a medium DA speed, in overlapping passes. Wipe and check before moving on.
  6. Polish for gloss Switch to a polishing pad and a polish (or an all-in-one like 3D Speed) to refine the haze a compound leaves behind.
  7. Protect it Seal the fresh finish with wax (Collinite 885 by hand, M63 by hand or machine) or a coating like Poli Glow. Buff off with clean microfiber.
  8. Maintain between waxes Use a waterless wash wax or a spray-on ceramic after washes. Re-wax two or three times a year, more often if you spend summers in the desert Southwest.

Before you start

Check your RV manufacturer’s care guide, especially for full-body paint, which needs automotive clear-coat products instead of marine compounds. Never compound bare aluminum or vinyl decals. Use a stable ladder or scaffold, and never stand on the roof edge with a running polisher.

Buying guide

What to look for in RV wax and oxidation removers

Four things that separate the right product for your rig from a shelf full of shiny bottles.

Wax vs. polish vs. compound

Compound cuts away oxidized gelcoat. Polish refines it to a gloss. Wax (or a coating) protects the result. Most RVs need all three only once; after that, wax and maintenance sprays keep it there.

Know your surface

Most RV caps and sidewalls are fiberglass with a gelcoat finish, which is what marine/RV products are made for. Full-body painted coaches have automotive clear coat and need gentler car products. Bare or painted aluminum siding should not be compounded.

Hand or machine

Wax and one-step products are fine by hand. Compounding a whole RV by hand is brutal; a dual-action (random orbital) polisher is safer than a rotary and does the work in a fraction of the time.

Buy for your climate

UV is what oxidizes gelcoat. Rigs that live in Arizona, Texas or Florida sun need more frequent waxing (or a longer-lasting coating) than rigs stored under a cover up north. The sun side always needs extra attention.

Helpful answers

RV wax and oxidation questions, answered

The questions RVers ask most when the shine starts to fade.

For most RVs with fiberglass gelcoat, a marine/RV wax made for gelcoat is the best choice. Meguiar’s M63 Flagship Premium Marine Wax is our top pick because it removes light oxidation and leaves polymer UV protection in one step. For the longest-lasting protection on a finish that is already clean and glossy, use a hard paste such as Collinite No. 885 Fleetwax.

Wash and dry the surface, then use a compound made for gelcoat, such as Meguiar’s M67 or the M49 step of Meguiar’s M4965 kit, on a dual-action polisher with a cutting pad. Work in 2 x 2 ft sections until the chalk is gone, refine with a polish, then protect it with wax or a coating. Light oxidation can often be handled with a one-step product like 3M Perfect-It Light Cutting Polish + Wax or Star brite Premium Restorer Wax.

On a full-body painted RV with automotive clear coat, yes, car wax and ceramic sprays are the right products. On fiberglass gelcoat, which is softer and more porous, a marine/RV wax is a better fit because it is formulated for gelcoat and heavy UV exposure. Car wax will not hurt gelcoat; it just will not last as long.

Two to three times a year for most RVs. Rigs parked in strong sun, such as the desert Southwest, Texas or Florida, should lean toward three, and the sun-facing side may need extra attention. A waterless wash wax or spray ceramic between full waxes keeps protection topped up.

Not for wax alone; most RV waxes go on fine by hand. For removing oxidation on a whole rig, a dual-action polisher such as the Griot’s Garage G9 saves hours and gives more even results. Dual-action polishers are much more forgiving than rotary buffers for beginners.

Yes, with a non-abrasive wax applied by hand. Avoid running compounds or polishes over vinyl graphics, because the abrasives can haze or lift them. Tape decals off with painter’s tape before machine polishing nearby.

A spray-on ceramic like Meguiar’s Hybrid Ceramic Wax is an easy, inexpensive way to add water beading and protection between waxes. Professional ceramic coatings last much longer but cost far more on a large rig. Either way, the gelcoat must be free of oxidation first, because a coating seals in whatever is underneath.

Paste waxes such as Collinite 885 generally last longer but take more effort to apply. Liquid waxes such as Meguiar’s M63 spread faster and often include light cleaners. Many RVers use a liquid cleaner wax on the whole rig and a paste wax on the sun side and front cap.

Our top pick

Start with Meguiar’s M63

One bottle cleans light oxidation and protects fiberglass gelcoat, so it is the easiest first step for most RVs.
