The Steamworks story
From 1920s motor garage to brewpub
Kris Oyler and Brian McEachron opened Steamworks in September 1996 in a sprawling former car dealership on East 2nd Avenue that began life in the 1920s as a motor garage. The name nods to the steam-powered Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, the town’s industrial roots and the brewhouse itself.
Thirty years on, it’s one of Durango’s busiest restaurants, with exposed beams, pipes and a dining room big enough for families and groups. Its beers have won medals at the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup, and the parent company is partly employee-owned.
Why it made our list
- 4.5 on Google from 6,700+ reviews
- Medal-winning beer brewed on site
- A huge dining room that handles big groups
- About 12 minutes from Alpen Rose RV Park
