Event weekends

Iron Horse describes itself as 520 acres of swampland turned into a mud park, with five mud recreation areas and more than 100 acres of ATV and UTV-only trails. Gates open Thursday morning of an event weekend, mudding starts Friday at 7 a.m., and the crowd stays into Sunday for freestyle runs, bounty holes and big-truck exhibitions.

RV tip: weekend admission includes primitive camping, so many guests bring the RV in. There are no hookups, but there is a dump station and generators are allowed. Old Highway 19 RV Park is about 4 minutes away if you’d rather sleep on full hookups.

Why go

A mud-bog institution on the Big Bend

Iron Horse has hosted big off-road weekends on US-19 for years. Todd and Kari Larson, who run a mega-truck operation of their own, bought the ranch in 2018. The headline events are Super Bog in October and the Dysfunctional Family Reunion in early spring, with mega trucks, buggies, ATVs and plenty of spectators.

For RVers it’s an unusual kind of attraction: you pay once for the weekend, camp in your own rig and spend three days watching or riding in the mud. If you’d rather stay off site, Old Highway 19 RV Park is about 4 minutes away and Perry KOA Holiday about 8.

Plan around the calendar. Iron Horse’s website lists event weekends only, and the next one shown is the Dysfunctional Family Reunion, March 4–7, 2027. Call (319) 290-0008 to confirm dates and rates before you go.

For RVers

Visiting from camp

The practical stuff we wished someone had told us before we pulled in.

Camp on site or nearby

Weekend admission ($80 a person) covers primitive tent and RV camping and your vehicles. Sites have no water or electric hookups, but there’s an RV dump station and generators are allowed. Grassy camping areas are for camping only; mudding there can get you escorted out.

Cash, ID and waivers

Iron Horse says it no longer accepts credit cards, so bring cash. Everyone 18 or older needs a valid ID, and anyone under 18 needs a parent present or a notarized waiver signed by both parents.

Pets

The website disagrees with itself: the rules say pets aren’t allowed, while the rates page lists a $60 per-pet fee. Call (319) 290-0008 before bringing a dog, and plan to leave pets at an RV park if the answer is no.

Rules worth knowing

No glass of any kind, campfires only in a container or pit with an adult attending, quiet hours from 1 to 7 a.m. in camping areas, and riders under 16 must wear a helmet and eye protection. Wristbands stay on all weekend.
