Why go

The “Carnegie of the Southwest”

The Spencer was Jackie Spencer’s dream. She and Dr. A.N. Spencer paid for it themselves, about $22 million, and after 15 years of planning ground was broken in January 1996. It opened on October 3, 1997, with violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Dave Brubeck and the New Mexico Symphony.

Albuquerque architect Antoine Predock shaped the building from a clay model as a single line rising out of the meadow, from zero to 95 feet, to echo Sierra Blanca. More than 1,000 tons of steel and hundreds of tons of white-flecked stone from Spain went into it, yet the hall holds just 514 seats.

For RVers it makes an easy evening out: about 13 miles north of Ruidoso off NM-220 in Alto, with summer and winter seasons of about 30 to 35 events each. The 2026–27 fall-to-spring season runs from November 2026 through April 2027.

Save your route first

The theater warns that many car navigation systems don’t cover the area and that cell service is unreliable. Search “Spencer Theater, Alto, NM” in Google Maps and save the route before you lose signal.
