What campers say
The campground report card
We don’t recycle other sites’ reviews, but the published scores are worth reading together: campers love waking up steps from the sand, while RVers mark it down for parking-lot sites, road and aircraft noise and early gate locks.

Watch the gate times. The gate locks overnight, at 7, 8 or 9 p.m. by season, and opens at 7 a.m.; no vehicles in or out while it’s locked.
Check the water first. Tijuana River sewage closes the ocean and bay to swimming at times; check the county’s beach water quality site before you go.

Before you book
Plan your stay
Everything that decides whether Silver Strand fits your rig, your dates and your budget, in one place.
Our take: a rare chance to camp in your RV a few steps from a San Diego ocean beach, with water and electric at every site and Coronado just up the road. It’s essentially a paved parking lot with tight back-in sites, highway and military aircraft noise and early gate locks, and sewage closures can keep you out of the water, so check conditions before you book.

Silver Strand State Beach is run by California State Parks, San Diego Coast District. Its campground is a converted beach parking lot for fully self-contained RVs only, with water and electric hookups added in 2013 and no tent camping.
Best for
- Beach lovers: front-row sites look over the dunes to the ocean, and the bay beach is a short walk through a tunnel.
- Cyclists: the Bayshore Bikeway runs past the park toward Coronado and Imperial Beach.
- City sightseeing: Coronado is about 4.5 miles north and downtown San Diego about 10 miles over the bridge.
- Self-contained rigs up to 40 ft: every site is paved, with water and electric.
Consider this
- It feels like a parking lot: sites are tight, with no landscaping; site quality (2.9) and noise (2.6) are Campendium’s lowest scores.
- SR-75 traffic and military aircraft are audible, and the 400s are reported as the loudest row.
- The gate locks as early as 7 p.m. in winter, with no vehicle entry or exit until 7 a.m.
- Sewage-related water closures recur, so swimming and surfing aren’t guaranteed.

Ask these on the phone before you reserve.

- Is the water open? Ask about current ocean and bay closures, or check the county’s beach water quality site.
