The Botanical Building and lily pond
Fronted by a long reflecting pond, the Botanical Building’s curved wooden lath roof shelters palms, ferns and other tropical plants. It’s one of the park’s best-known sights and an easy, free first stop just off El Prado.
RV tip: nonresidents can park free for up to 3 hours at Lower Inspiration Point, which has spaces for buses and oversized vehicles, and a free shuttle runs from there to other parts of the park.
More to see

Why go
A free day out in the middle of the city
Balboa Park began in 1868, when San Diego’s civic leaders set aside 1,400 acres for a city park. It took its current name for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, which left behind many of the ornate buildings along El Prado. Today the park covers about 1,200 acres.
For RVers the draw is flexibility. You can spend a few hours walking the gardens and El Prado for nothing but parking, or build a full day around the museums. The park is about 16 minutes from the Chula Vista and Mission Bay RV parks in usual traffic.
Parking rules are changing. The city charges for parking in Balboa Park through December 31, 2026, and the City Council approved removing paid parking starting January 1, 2027.
