What you’ll see

Marsh, cypress and gators on the north shore

Eagle Bay runs guided airboat trips from its landing on SR-78, just southwest of town, out into the marsh along the north shore of Lake Okeechobee.

Start here

The Eagle Bay marsh and Limpkin Creek

The ride heads out through the Eagle Bay marshlands to the cypress trees up Limpkin Creek, a corner of the lake most visitors only see from the dike. Alligators are the topic Google reviewers bring up most, followed by how much the guides know about the lake and its wildlife.

RV tip: the landing is about 3 minutes from the Okeechobee KOA and Silver Palms, so leave the rig hooked up at camp and drive over in the tow vehicle.

More to see

  • Alligators and birdsLook for alligators along the banks and wading birds in the shallows: herons, egrets and, fittingly, limpkins. Ospreys hunt over the open water.
  • Private toursBook the boat for your own group of up to 6 people, a good fit for a family or two couples traveling together.
  • A picnic stopEagle Bay has a picnic area at the landing, so pack a lunch and make a morning of it.
  • Captains who know the lakeKnowledgeable guides come up often in Google reviews, and Yelp reviewers single out Captain Troy by name.

Why go

See the lake from the water, not the dike

Lake Okeechobee covers about 730 square miles, but much of its edge is a shallow maze of marsh, grass and open water that boats with propellers under the hull can’t reach. An airboat skims right over the top, which is how you get into the back marsh where the gators and wading birds are.

For RVers the appeal is convenience. Eagle Bay is a few minutes from the RV parks on US-441, a ride fits easily into a morning, and the captain does the navigating, so you see the marsh without hauling a boat of your own.

Winter is the sweet spot, when cool, sunny days bring alligators out to bask and migrating birds fill the marsh. Summer rides are hot and afternoon storms can cut trips short, so book a morning slot.

Why it made our list

  • Gators are the top topic in Google reviews
  • 3 minutes from the US-441 RV parks
  • Private boats for up to 6 people
  • Marsh and cypress up Limpkin Creek
  • Picnic area at the landing

For RVers

Planning an airboat ride from camp

The practical stuff we wished someone had told us before we pulled in.

Leave the rig at camp

Eagle Bay sits on SR-78 about a mile from the US-441 junction, a 3-minute drive from the Okeechobee KOA and Silver Palms. It doesn’t publish RV parking details, so take the tow vehicle and keep the lot easy for everyone.

Book ahead and budget for the minimum

Rides carry a $120 minimum per trip, so two adults pay the same as three. Call (863) 824-0500 to book and confirm times, and bring cash for the tip, which isn’t included.

Pets and noise

Eagle Bay doesn’t publish a pet policy, so ask before you bring a dog. Airboats are loud and open and the marsh is full of gators, so most dogs are happier at camp. Bring ear protection for kids and anyone sensitive to noise.

Dress for sun and wind

There’s no roof on an airboat. Wear a hat that won’t blow off, sunglasses and sunscreen, and bring a light jacket on winter mornings, when the wind on the water feels much colder than it does on shore.
