What to order

South America by way of a wood fire

Lisa Dahl built Mariposa’s menu after cooking and traveling in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Steaks and seafood come off a wood-fired grill, and lunch is a lighter, cheaper way in.

Start with the empanadas

Handmade empanadas come three to an order with chimichurri for $22. Yuca fries ($14) are the dish Google reviewers mention most after the view itself.

RV tip: Mariposa enforces a dress code in the main dining room. Hiking clothes, caps, flip-flops and athletic wear aren’t allowed, so change at the rig before dinner.

More on the menu

  • Filet mignonA 7 oz center-cut filet with mushroom gorgonzola chipotle sauce, $54 a la carte.
  • Pulpo parrillaWood-fired Spanish octopus with garbanzo purée, $26.

Why go

Sedona’s splurge with a view

Mariposa opened in 2015 as Lisa Dahl’s first restaurant with a view. Glass walls and a covered terrace look out over West Sedona’s red rocks, and the wine list has earned Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence.

It is the most expensive pick on our list, with dinner steaks at $54 to $58 before sides. Reviewers mention the sunset views more than any dish, and the ratings hold up: 4.4 on Google and Tripadvisor and 4.1 on Yelp.

Lunch from 11 to 2 is the budget-friendly way to see the room, with empanadas, tacos and burgers. It is about 4 minutes by car from Rancho Sedona.

For RVers

Getting to Mariposa in the tow vehicle

The practical stuff we wished someone had told us before we pulled in.

Book the sunset seating

Dinner is by reservation, and the main room takes parties of up to six. Ask for a window or terrace table and arrive before sunset.

Dress for the room

The dress code is resort casual. Mariposa turns away caps, hiking clothes, yoga and sweat pants, tank tops, short shorts and flip-flops in the main dining room.

Private lot, no RV rules

Mariposa has a private lot on the bluff, but it doesn’t publish rules for RVs or trailers. Drive the tow vehicle from your park.

Try lunch on a hiking day

Lunch runs 11 am to 2 pm daily with lighter plates. It is a good stop after a morning hike, once you’ve changed out of trail clothes.
