What to order

Tamales made the way grandma did

Owner and chef Claudia Gonzalez grew up in Taxco, Guerrero, learning tamales from both of her grandmothers. The menu changes daily, with tamales by the piece or the dozen.

Start here

Start with a tamale or two

Tamales come in beef, pork, chicken, vegetarian and vegan versions, made with organic masa and no lard. The Tamale Supreme comes unwrapped and topped with black beans, spinach, cheese, guacamole and salsa.

RV tip: Tamales often sell out, so come in the morning. Ask about a dozen to go; they reheat well in the RV oven or microwave.

  • Vegan tamalesThe second-most-mentioned dish in Google reviews.

Why go

The best-value Mexican meal on our list

Tamaliza started as Tamaliza Market in a borrowed kitchen in January 2015, then opened this cafe in a small casita on SR-89A in February 2017. Claudia Gonzalez cooks with fresh, natural, organic and non-GMO ingredients.

It is a counter-service spot, so it’s quick and casual, with many vegan options. Ratings are 4.5 on Tripadvisor and Yelp and 4.4 on Google, and reviewers talk most about the tamales and the mole.

Rancho Sedona is about 5 minutes away by car, which makes this an easy breakfast or lunch on a hiking day.
