The Oscar’s story
A Durango diner where the train never stops
Paula and Bruce Berg opened Oscar’s in Town Plaza in 1980, and for four decades it was the town’s morning meeting place for local news, business breakfasts and family outings. In 2022 the Bergs sold the cafe to local restaurant veterans Kelly Bennett and Guy Winzenread, who promised to keep things the way regulars liked them.
It’s still a red-booth, checkered-floor ’50s diner, with walls of Snowdown festival posters and a G-scale model train running above the tables. The cafe says the train covers about five miles a day. Visit Durango ranked Oscar’s first on its list of the town’s best breakfast spots.
Why it made our list
- 4.6 on Google from 1,500+ reviews
- Scratch-made breakfasts with big portions
- A model train that kids and train fans love
- About 11 minutes from Alpen Rose RV Park
