The Gun Barrel story

A steakhouse in a wildlife museum

The Gun Barrel opened in 1993 in what had been the Wyoming Wildlife Museum & Taxidermy, and it is still locally owned and operated. Many of the museum’s full-mount trophies, taken around Jackson Hole, are still on display.

The name comes from Gun Barrel City, a small town in East Texas, which gave the restaurant its original 1950s hand-painted town sign. Tripadvisor gave it a Travelers’ Choice award for 2026.

Why it made our list

  • 4.4 on Google from 2,900+ reviews
  • Bison and elk over open mesquite
  • Mounted game from the old museum
  • About 11 minutes from Fireside Resort
