We don’t recycle other sites’ reviews, but the published scores are worth reading together: the pines, staff and lounge win praise, while road and train noise pull the averages down.

Everything that decides whether Woody Mountain fits your rig, your dates and your budget, in one place.

Our take: a pine-shaded, easygoing basecamp on Route 66 with extras most parks lack: a coffee and wine lounge, B&B rooms and year-round sites. Expect road and train noise and rustic dirt sites.

Open

Woody Mountain is a classic Route 66 campground, open since 1968, that has been freshened up with a remodeled bathhouse, B&B rooms and a coffee and wine lounge. The tall pines are the draw; the trade-off is road and train noise and some uneven dirt sites.

Best for

  • Grand Canyon, Sedona and Route 66 road-trippers who want one pine-shaded basecamp in Flagstaff.
  • Mixed groups: RVs, tents and a B&B room let non-campers come along.
  • Travelers who like a social campground, with karaoke, trivia, live music and a wine lounge on site.
  • Winter travelers: it stays open year-round, unlike many high-country parks.

Consider this

  • Route 66 traffic and trains across the road can be heard day and night.
  • Sites are dirt and gravel and vary in size and level; bring leveling blocks.
  • Only the premium tier has 50-amp power.
  • Nightly stays are capped at 21 nights; longer stays book as monthly.

Good to know before you pull in

Five things that change your booking

Ask these on the phone before you reserve.

  • Do I need 50 amp? Only the premium 50-amp tier has it; everything else is 30 amp or less.
  • Will my rig fit this site? No maximum length is published, and some sites are motorhome/van only because of hookup placement and space.
  • How far is the site from the road? Route 66 and the rail line run along the front, so light sleepers should ask for distance.
  • Arriving on a weekend or holiday? Weekends need 2 nights and holidays 3, and holiday cancellations are stricter.
  • Pack for 7,000 ft. Nights are cold even in summer, monsoon storms roll in July–September, and wood fires aren’t allowed, so bring propane.

Frequently asked questions

A few details before you hit the road.

Yes. It’s open all year, with monthly rates for October through March. At about 7,000 ft, expect freezing nights and some snow, so bring a heated hose and plenty of propane.

Probably. The park has pull-through sites and Campendium users report rigs up to 42 ft, but the campground doesn’t publish a maximum length and site sizes vary. Give the office your length and rig type when you book, since some sites are motorhome/van only.

Route 66 runs along the front of the park and trains run on the rail line across the road, so expect some noise day and night. Quiet hours are 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Light sleepers should ask for a site farther from the road.

The rates page lists premium 50-amp full-hookup sites (from $85 a night); every other site is 30 amp or less. The park’s rules page still says 30-amp only, so confirm 50-amp service when you book.

No wood fires. Charcoal and propane grills are fine, and you can rent a propane fire pit for your site. S’mores kits are available from the front office.

RV and tent sites check in at 1 p.m. and check out by 11 a.m.; B&B rooms check in at 3 p.m. Early check-in ($20) and late check-out ($25 an hour) need office approval.

Yes. The on-site bed and breakfast has themed king rooms from $115 a night, with coffee and a pastry each morning (or a $10 voucher at the lounge) and complimentary evening wine. The rooms have no TVs, by design.
