The Yacht Club story
Welcome aboard, long time no sea
In the 1970s, Californian Al Madden bought a local beer joint, renamed it the Quartzsite Yacht Club and named himself Commodore. The joke stuck: memberships started at $10 and come with a card, a certificate and a T-shirt.
Members say some real yacht clubs have honored the card, though that isn’t guaranteed. The club appears in the Oscar-winning film Nomadland, where Frances McDormand and David Strathairn dance inside.
Why it made our list
- A Quartzsite landmark since the 1970s
- Seen in the film Nomadland
- Karaoke, live music and pool tables
