The self-guided historic walk

The visitor bureau’s free self-guided tour covers about half a mile and takes about 90 minutes, including 51 stairs to the top of the bridge. Pick up the brochure at the Lake Havasu City Visitor Center in English Village or download it before you go, and look for the numbered granite blocks from the 1960s move.

RV tip: park once in the free English Village lot and do everything on foot. In summer, walk early or after sunset; July highs average about 109°F.

Why go

The world’s most famous moved bridge

John Rennie designed this London Bridge in 1799, and it was completed over the River Thames in 1831. When London replaced it, Lake Havasu City founder Robert P. McCulloch won the auction on April 18, 1968, with a bid of $2,460,000. Crews took it apart into 10,276 numbered granite blocks, shipped them through the Panama Canal and rebuilt them here as granite facing over a steel frame.

The bridge was rededicated on October 10, 1971, in front of about 25,000 people, and the Bridgewater Channel was dredged beneath it, turning the point of land beyond into an island. U.S. customs treated the bridge as an antique, and Guinness recorded it as the largest antique ever sold.

For RVers it is an easy, low-cost outing. Walking across, around and under the bridge is free, the English Village lot is free, and it is about 7 to 12 minutes from the three RV parks below. Leashed dogs are welcome along the channel.

For RVers

Visiting the bridge with an RV

The practical stuff we wished someone had told us before we pulled in.

Park in English Village

Free parking is available at 422 English Village, at the foot of the bridge, which is also the address to put in your GPS. Official pages don’t list RV size limits for the lot, so if you are towing, the easiest plan is to leave the rig at camp and drive in with the tow vehicle.

Walk it early or late

July highs average about 109°F, and the city advises staying out of the sun in the hottest hours and never leaving pets in a parked vehicle. Mornings are cooler, and after dark the bridge lights put on the better show.

Bring the dog

Leashed pets are allowed along the Bridgewater Channel, and the enclosed Lions Dog Park at London Bridge Beach is just across the bridge. It closes Mondays and Thursdays from 8 to 10 am for maintenance.

Plan for the stairs

The self-guided tour includes 51 stairs to the top of the bridge, so wear comfortable shoes. Visit Arizona lists the bridge as accessible, and the walkways along the channel are a good place to see the arches.
