What you’ll see

How a fishing village became Destin

A small, volunteer-run museum a block from the harbor that tells Destin’s story from its 1830s pioneers to today’s charter fleet.

The Mike Long Memorial Fish Wall

More than 100 fish mounts fill the museum, many of them along the Mike Long Memorial Fish Wall, with an interactive display about the fish that local anglers chase. It’s the part of the museum most visitors remember, and a good primer before a charter trip.

RV tip: the museum is closed Sunday and Monday. Pair a weekday or Saturday visit with a walk on the harbor boardwalk across US-98.

Why go

A rainy-day stop with a lot of local color

The museum opened on October 1, 2005, in the former Destin Library building, and is run as a nonprofit by a volunteer board. Its exhibits follow Destin from the pioneers of the 1830s through the seine boats that built the town’s fishing industry to the charter boats in the harbor today. It marked its 20th anniversary in 2025.

For RVers it’s an easy add-on to a harbor day. The museum sits just off US-98 near the foot of the Destin bridge, across from the Destin Community Center, and the city’s harbor boardwalk is a short walk away. Come in the tow vehicle; the museum doesn’t post parking details and the nearby city lots take cars and pickups only.

Because it’s indoors, it works in any weather, and it’s open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 4. The museum also runs the Holiday on the Harbor Lighted Boat Parade. After Hurricane Isaias in October 2026 we found no closure notice for the museum, but call ahead to be sure.
